A picturesque destination that is simply beautiful. Not only is it the largest island in Thailand, but there is also something for everyone and is a place I would recommend travelling to at least once if you find yourself in Asia!
I will start with saying that Phuket is very much a tourist hub … I have not been home to Australia for a couple years and I felt like I was home haha there were many Australians and European tourists as well, which has its advantages, but getting in touch with the culture can have its difficulty in high season, it just really depends on where you stay and what you are after on your holiday
Now a big highlight for me and I would highly suggest going to is ‘Old Phuket Town’. The vibe feels like a mix of China and Europe. The architecture is stunning, and some really does resemble Portugal, you wouldn’t think you are in Phuket that is for sure! They have cute trendy cafes along their narrow colourfully coated streets and unique stylish stores. On Sundays they have a market with street food local delicacies, craft vendors, stalls entertainment and so on. I really enjoyed spending a few hours on a Sunday here, it was very busy, so I suggest going a little earlier in the evening and go with a tummy ready to try some cultural foods!
A night out along Bangla Road … now let’s shift gears shall we! This is a completely different scene of Phuket, it is known for its big crowd wild nights, many people embracing a party atmosphere. It comes alive in the evening with the daytime being quiet and a little more reserved with cafes, restaurants, tattoo parlours – so many) open. I personally didn’t spend much time here as it isn’t in particularly my sort of atmosphere, but on a side note: I had a lovely dinner in ‘Summer’ it is a French inspired restaurant, but nevertheless it is in a wonderful location beside Bangla Road. It is upstairs so, you have a wonderful view of the ocean seating outside and the food, service its wonderful. We returned a couple times to the same place as we all really enjoyed our dishes. The quality and freshness were the best we had on the trip
I would definitely recommend going to an elephant sanctuary and get a big smooch from an elephant! They are such wonderful, gorgeous creatures and I feel like if you haven’t been surrounded by elephants in Thailand, have you really been to Thailand?!
Nai Thon is a stunning beach, you make your way down a steep roughly 200ish steps, surrounded by luscious palm trees, you make your way down to crystal clear waters and white sanded beaches … definitely make sure you bring your camera or well charged phone down there!
Ok now my favourite topic as per usual, let’s have a chat about the food!
First things first … the fruit! So super fresh and sweet! When I arrived Papaya, The Queen was in season, as well as pineapple, mango and banana. Every morning I indulged in the fruit and had the best papayas I have ever had in my life honestly. I also tried more exotic fruits for the fruit time, like durian, guava and rose apple. Where I was staying had a ban on durian as it is quite a stinky fruit, yet incredibly creamy and sweet, so I had to have that outside. It was really nice along most streets having the convenience of fresh fruits available as a ‘fast food option’ as opposed to other processed goods.
You really can’t go wrong with the fresh seafood that they have available as there are ample options. My favourite was a whole line caught sea bass steamed with a side of papaya salad- yum!
They also have impressive curries and an Indian touch on flavours too
Some other local dishes I recommend trying are the green curries, coconut pancakes, jackfruit curry and pad phak – a stir fried vegetable dish
I can’t give you my taste on the meat options, but there are an array of pork, beef and egg options. I would only be mindful of the MSG when travelling around
When it comes to travelling around, tuk tuks is what we used the most. It was very convenient as there are many around and reasonably priced as well. Although another option I feel I would consider is hiring a motorbike
I am going to sign off Part 1 here for Thailand, I will send an update for Part 2!
