Nairobi, Kenya honestly is such an incredible getaway! I highly recommend going … especially if you live in Dubai, as it is only 5 hours to reach and .. no rain yay! I am such a sun baby so I decided to travel before the rainy season starts, which throughout April typically runs its course, but with the climate at the moment it’s hard to know exactly these days ..
I stayed within Nairobi for my first time solo! I was fortunate to have a couple of my closest friends move back home last year, so I was lucky to meet with them as well
Now, as you may know I love Africa and continually become more gravitated to being there, but the culture, the genuine kindness of the nationals in Kenya and communication … it is pure bliss and such a breeze!
The fresh super sweet fruit and locally harvested vegetables on the side of the roads, throughout the villages, the natural serenity and organic living, the national park and the greenery … a lot of this reminded me of home in Australia, the fresh air, the roaming animals … Do I need to say anymore?!
Now, there is a lot you can do depending on what you like and what your personal preference is for a holiday – relaxing, adventurous, a cultural trip?
I genuinely feel even if I travel 100 times over to Nairobi, there will be something new each time, there are endless tours, safaris to choose from as well.
Let’s get to the food scene .. It is amazing!
The local dishes are delicious, wholesome and healthy
Here are a few of my highlights that I enjoyed, most on repeat over the course of my time spent there ..
Kachumbari – a tomato, onion salad
Sukuma wiki – my favourite – sautéd collard
Matoke – a plantain bean stew (really yummy, just boiled and mashed)
Maharagwe – spiced coconut bean soup
Githeri – boiled corn and bean stew
Mukimo – mashed potato, maize and pumpkin leaves
Ugali – a staple made from corn meal
Other dishes I didn’t try, but are popular are Nyama Choma – roasted meat
Mandazi – an African style donut
Pilau – aromatic flavoured rice
Samosas, Bhajiyas and honestly endless options .. I would be here all day
Now, wherever you are in the world, there will always be something. Honestly, I was there as a single woman, and I didn’t come across any negative encounters. However, you just need to be weary and conscious of your surroundings.
I always had my bag on me, I didn’t walk around with my phone loosely in my hand. It is safest to drink bottled water, so I went through quite a number of plastic bottles than I usually would. I did get a bit of a mosquito attack on my legs one night, but that was my fault for not using repellent.
I didn’t travel anywhere solo in the evening, so I don’t have much to say on that, but overall, it is amazing, you just need to be street smart, ask locals questions – most people are willing to help and give advice when visiting their city!
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions of queries on my stay in Nairobi xxx
